When I was a kid in the 70s, I was obsessed with monsters. Watching the old Universal, Toho, and Hammer films on KTVU’s Creature Features was a formative time for me. I got into making the old Aurora model kits around that time, but mostly ruined them, and my originals are probably rotting under the landfill near the Berkeley Marina now.
For years, I thought about starting them up again. I told myself that if I ever had a Big Time Writing Office (TM) I’d get a bunch of these old models to decorate it.
In 2020, when COVID hit, and we were all shut up in the house for a while, I felt the urge to do something fun while stuck at home that didn’t involve staring at a screen. I also wanted to model creativity and “fun for the sake of fun” to my kids. So I started in on these old models again. Fortunately, I discovered that they’ve been pretty much in production from various manufacturers all this time. So I picked up a new one every few months, and got to work.
